time time for some crayon

Posted in art, design on 06/07/2013 by g00ba

Using a lot of Crayola lately, these were all done at work, some of them while I was on break…

This next one has fancy brush pen lines by Mel Tingdahl, with crayons by me. Rockin’ Marceline collabo of doom!

Also just finished a bunch of freelance projects that will be getting printed soon. Look at them!

There’s a Threadless contest going on for best Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle design. I used the frustrating underwater section of the first NES TMNT game as seen below, for inspiration.

Took like 5 hours, but only uses 4 colors because the green background is the color of the shirt!

Whoa, rough sketch was rough!

Design will cover entire front of shirt for maximum tackiness.

Have had this one sitting on the hard-drive for awhile now. I’ve been working on integrating more text into my graphics. Step one, scribble some things on a scrap piece of paper.

Scanned into the ol’ Photoshop and completely redid/cleaned up the text. Lately I’ve been getting into the habit of quickly writing things without lifting the pen off the paper, so I ran with that. Also fixed the cheekbone, nose and ear. Never really looked at an ear for reference before, which is kind of weird considering (A.) how old I am, and (B.) how may ears I have probably drawn in that period of time.

Then next, popped over to Illustrator to trace my lines with the pen tool, and flip the fill around. Now you’ve got your original lines, but so much sharper than before, though I guess it’s kind of hard to tell without looking at a larger version of the file.

Then lastly, jumped back over to Photoshop one more time and applied a little gradient for shiz and giggles. Calling it done! Click this last one to open a larger version if you so please.

Might as well throw in a few miscellanious things from work while I’m at it. Sharpie, pencils and crayons on the backs of meal tickets. Shazaam!

I recently had the chance to do a mix-tape layout for DC the Midi, far and away the best underground hip-hop producer in New England. I’d list the type of MC’s he has collaborated with over the past decade, but it’s pretty much everybody worth a damn on the east coast and beyond. Check out his discography yourself, over at his website. Def an honor to provide artwork for a member of the East Coast Avengers.

Download it right HERE. Don’t be stupid.

I cut out all the elements, minus the text, in construction paper with a exacto knife. There is only gonna be about 100 physical disc copies pressed up, so good luck getting one of those!!!

I haven’t created an original font from the ground up in quite awhile, but I’ve had this idea rolling around in my brain for about a month. Of all the logos in the world, the Wu-Tang logo has to be one of the most distinctive and badass logos of all-time. Not just in rap music, but in everything, period. That bold W is just immediatly recognisable, and dammit, it just looks cool. So I wanted to make a whole alphabet built around that logo, and it took some effort, but here it is.

The project took a bit longer than I thought it would, but it was worth it. Now I can write out any word I want in little Wu-tangs. Like Wu-tang.

Or just any random word that pops into your head, like Fluffernutter.

Please do not use the Wu-phabet without either my, or Bobby Digital’s expressed consent. Continue reading for a peek at some of the stages it took to get this thing finished.

The Attic Bits are bringing the chiptune scene to NH. If you don’t know what that means, then this interview and this article are probably more insightful than anything I could manage to type here. This is what they sound like. You should probably go and support them now.

I cranked out a poster for them a couple weeks ago, which I posted below. The poster is inspired by the narrative contained within the tracks of the new album. To the untrained ear, one could mistakenly believe the songs are just a buncha cool sounding beeps and boops, which I would not completely disagree with. Undoubtedly however, there is also an underlying story, and through the act of listening to it, you will inexplicably visualize an inner universe that is specific to each individual listener.

Also you can click here to see the initial rough sketch if you’d like. I can’t help but feel there was a certain strength to the original doodle that the cleaner version lacks, I hate when that happens. Lost in translation I guess.

Half a year since I posted anything in here, holy hell! I’m going to play catchup here soon and post some of the older stuff I’ve finished more recently, while hopefully also staying a bit more up to date with current projects. I’ve proven to be woefully inadequate at keeping this place updated, so we’ll just have to see how that goes. It is a spikepit after-all, so please don’t mind the cobwebs.
