Last weekend I went on a bit of a hiphop event marathon. First off was the MC battle on Thursday which had the mighty Ape defending his freestyle crown. One could call into question the judging of the event, but in the end Ape still ripped a few kids, and a good time was had by all. The Nabo Rawk performance was larger than life as always. I also managed to score a poster of the upcoming Teched Out Neanderthals which is going to be super good.
On Saturday was The Maine Event fund raiser which was pretty much a bboy/bgirl convention. I also met a lot of graff artists, and filled out my blackbook a bit. The event featured a thousand dollar prize popping competition, and a two thousand dollar 2 on 2 breaking battle. The popping competition was absolutely dominated by Lady Beast, whose talent is not of this world. I wish I had video from that event, but for now this will have to do.
The 2 on 2 competition was an epic battle, YAK vs United Outkast. While both groups were vastly talented, the crowd was in a bit of a shock when the prize went to YAK. It seemed as if United Outkast had sealed the deal when the judging panel called for a tie breaker round. Sweet Lu brought his A game, but in the end, the judges saw it a bit differently. The nature of competition is to put forth your best effort, and let your skills speak for themselves. It would have been easy for United Outkast to be angry. It would have been easy for them to be poor sports. But instead of dwelling on the negative, we all went straight to Milly’s in Manchester where they proceeded to tear the place down to the ground.
There was already a good crowd gathered for LB’s birthday, but nobody was prepared for a bboy team of such a high caliber. Their performance trumped any breaking I had seen earlier that day, and to top it off they did it on the stickiest floor I’ve ever set foot on. From Maine, to New Hampshire in one night, United Outkast represented very well. I had the pleasure of spending some time with Lu and Combo after the madness that was Saturday, and we got to sit back, relax and play some NES. It was the perfect way to cap off the weekend.
Watch the video for a sample of what the entire group has to offer.
